“With a well-deserved reputation as a builder with a great eye for detail when it comes to vernacular architecture, it is no surprise to see Rosemullion Homes among the winners at this year’s What House? Awards.
Belevedere comprises 25 homes in the Cornish county town of Truro. Rosemullion commissioned architects Batterton Tyack Associates to create a scheme inspired by Truro’s Georgian, Victorian and Art Deco buildings. The development sits comfortably in its surroundings. As one example, Belvedere’s centrepiece, House 16, has a distinctive galleried tower that echoes the cupola of nearby St John’s Church. Each house on the development is individual, and avoids the uniformity that is the downfall of much new-build housing.
Facades are a mixture of elegant Georgian-inspired render, with the earthy Cornish vernacular of Bodmin granite and tile-hung Delabole slates. Granite retaining walls, elegant period-design street furniture and a well-considered planting scheme all add to a feel of solid, considered and sensitive construction. A significant acknowledgement of this successful partnership between architect and developer is the scheme’s seal of approval from the Duchy of Cornwall, which described Belvedere as “a very faithful and committed interpretation of the design brief and architectural design”.”
