The Orchard’s homes provide the key to a greener future

Residents of a village near St Austell will have the chance to find out about making new builds more sustainable at an open day being held this weekend (Saturday 2 February).

Truro-based Rosemullion Homes is inviting the people of Polgooth and the surrounding area to view “The Orchard”, its new two-house development based in the heart of the village.

With news that all new houses will have to be carbon free by 2015 Rosemullion is keen to show people the rapid progress it is making towards this target.

During the afternoon from 2–4.30pm on Saturday 2 February, visitors will have the chance to see the properties’ ground source heat pumps in action, which according to manufacturers Worcester Bosch will save around 50% running costs when compared with gas fired or oil heating systems.

Richard Blackmore, area representative of Worcester Bosch, said: “Cornwall is one of the best areas in the country for tapping into ground source heat.

“The bed rock of granite in the county gives us a much better heat return, which means that new home-owners here should benefit from even greater savings.

“But as well as purchasers noticing the difference in their pocket, the local environment and planet benefits as well, as we’ve worked out that properties like those at the Orchard will save around 2.3 tonnes of carbon per year.

“Its great to see Rosemullion taking the leading the way in the South West and working to make a difference.”

The properties also boast woodburning stoves and increased insulation, which Rosemullion’s managing director, Roger Carson, believes will further boost their energy efficiency.

“There is concern amongst people at the moment regarding rising energy costs, with gas, oil and electric bills also seeming likely to increase further, so what better way to help combat those rises by utilising the warmth from the ground in a totally environmentally friendly way.”

The two energy-efficient houses at The Orchard offer generous 4 bedroom family accommodation plus a huge 33’ loft store in a non-estate setting in this attractive village. They are complete and ready for occupation at £435,000 each.
