Housebuilder Lays the Foundations For a Greener Future

A Cornish housebuilder has introduced the first phase of a recycling programme which it believes will make its latest build its most environmentally friendly to date.

Already Rosemullion Homes has saved an estimated 148 lorry journeys at its flagship Trinity Watch development in St Ives, by recycling stone on site.

The programme, running in two phases, will see the company aim to reduce the amount of waste it produces.

Phase one has seen rock excavated from the earth, crushed and reused as hardcore around the site.

“Working with Chris Lello Plant Hire and its stonecrusher we crushed and recycled 590 tons of the Blue Elvin stone, which will now go into the foundations and hardcore for the road,” said Craig Thomson, Rosemullion’s senior buyer and green team member.

“By recycling on site we saved 37 lorry journeys.

“But its also important to remember that if we didn't use the recycled stone we would have had to buy in 590 tons which would be another 37 lorries.

“With journeys to and from the site this means 148 lorry trips have been saved in total.

“By not having these lorries going on and off site has also hugely reduced the amount of mud tracked onto the local roads, as well as the congestion they would have caused on the already narrow road infrastructure, which I think is a fantastic achievement, and a great benefit to the local environment.”

Phase two, which will see the company looking to recycle the remainder of its site waste will begin in the New Year.

Rosemullion’s managing director, Roger Carson, said: “We’re excited by the prospect of making Trinity Watch our most sustainable build to date.

“We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously and we have already put a number of measures in place to reduce our impact.

“These include using local materials, local contractors, underfloor heating, wood-burning stoves and increased insulation in all properties.

“And we’ve established our own green team to look at further ways in which we can improve.

“This is a new way of working for us, but I believe that it will become a model with which we can build on in the future.”
