Sustainable Developer of the Year

“Rosemullion Homes is a great example of a very small developer putting its money where its mouth is. The submission was characterised by a refreshing lack of jargon and ‘sustainability speak’, but with obvious, tangible examples of sustainable housing in practice.

Sustainability is a multi-faceted issue: carbon savings and reducing water use are the cornerstones, but Rosemullion takes a much wider view. Social sustainability is a core part of the company’s ethos, and it comes from being rooted in a strong sense of place. It takes from the community and it gives back, respecting its native landscape.

Rosemullion’s strategy does not come from expensive management reports or detailed feasibility studies, but is driven instead by a ‘Green Team’ of committed employees. The company is prepared to take some risks by innovating with unfamiliar technologies such as ground-source heat pumps, biomass heating and hot-water systems. Some of the eco-features are arguably ‘business as usual’ (local, natural materials, local labour, reclaimed materials), but the judges saw this as a positive determinant in providing the award. We applaud this level of innovation mixed with common sense, and hope that other small developers will be inspired by Rosemullion’s example.”
